Zona Franca
This film focuses on the music, lives, and dreams of the troubadours who make their living playing along Havana, Cuba's Malecon seawall. The Malecon, a 5-km, 3-ft high seawall that runs along the shores of Havana, serves as the inspiration and backdrop for the film and accompanying album. Because of the economic situation in Cuba where monthly salaries average around $20, few can afford to go to clubs and restaurants. Instead, thousands come together along this 5-km stretch to socialize, drink Cuba Libres, sell goods, and even engage in illegal activities. The film captures the social, political, and personal context from which this music arises giving a unique and unfettered view of Cuba.
