Newly installed in a precinct in Rome, by-the-book police detective Dante Lombardozzi (Alberto Sordi) immediately begins irritating his more relaxed fellow officers with his fussy attention to detail and obsessive following of the rules. He even romances the beautiful young Marisa (Franca Tamantini) according to suggestions listed in his trusty police manual. But when it looks as if a murder is being hushed up by his superiors, Lombardozzi's straight-arrow fortitude is put to the test.
