Kirikou föds i en afrikansk by som vilar under en häxas förbannelse. Brunnen har sinat, kvinnorna och de gamla plågas och nästan alla män har blivit uppätna av häxan. Häxan Karaba är vacker med elak. Med hjälp av sina hemska och lydiga robotar håller hon byn helt i sin makt. Men knappt har Kirikou blivit född förrän han bestämmer sig för att rädda byn.
