12 år gamle Anna er sendt til landsbygda for sommeren. I en villa ved vannet treffer hun Marnie. For alle andre i bygda er huset forlatt, men når Anna nærmer seg er det som om tiden stilles tilbake og huset fylles med liv. Anna og Marnie blir bestevenner, men en dag er hun plutselig borte.
