Amerika 1926: De Nederlandse 24 jarige Antonia Brico is als kind met haar ouders geëmigreerd naar Amerika. Ze droomt ervan om dirigent te worden, maar die ambitie wordt door niemand serieus genomen. Haar pianoleraar adviseert haar om geen toelating te doen voor het conservatorium.
