De 12-jarige Niilas woont al zo lang hij zich kan herinneren bij zijn vader en kent zijn Zweedse moeder nauwelijks. Deze zomer moet Niilas -tegen zijn wil in- naar Lapland afreizen waar zijn moeder en haar nieuwe familie wonen tussen de Sami, een inheemse groep rendierherders.
