La historia se desarrolla en la Rusia del siglo XVIII. El confesor de la emperatriz Isabel, un monje llamado Lavr, es exiliado a un monasterio en una región montañosa embrujada. Años después, el ahijado de la emperatriz, Andrey, viaja al malogrado lugar y se reúne con Lavr, pero antes de que puedan regresar a San Petersburgo deben enfrentarse a fuerzas malignas y criaturas del lado oscuro.
