José María "El Tempranillo", huyendo de la justicia, se refugia en Sierra Morena. Tras un período de duro aprendizaje se convierte en el cabecilla de un grupo de bandoleros. Algún tiempo después, Pedro Sánchez, un político liberal, se escapa de una cuerda de presos y recorre la sierra en su busca. Cuando lo encuentra, intenta atraerlo a la causa liberal.
