À l'été 1943, Cesira et sa fille Rosetta fuient les bombardements de Rome pour retourner dans le village natal de la jeune veuve, la Ciociara. Toutefois, elles n'y trouveront pas le répit escompté puisqu'une troupe de soldats français y abusent d'elles, les laissant en proie à un fort traumatisme que même le gentleman Michele aura du mal à estomper.
