Norman Boyle, un académico y padre de familia que reside en Nueva York, es asignado para investigar el extraño suicidio de un científico, compañero suyo, llamado Dr. Peterson. Lo único que Norman sabe es que Peterson se trasladó a un viejo caserón de Nueva Inglaterra junto a su amante, para investigar a su antiguo dueño, un tal Dr. Freudstein, y que al final, Peterson mató a su amante y acabó ahorcándose.
