Der junge Historiker Norman zieht mit seiner Frau Lucy und deren Sohn Bob nach Neu-England. Er will dort die Forschungen seines Vorgängers Peterson weiterführen, nachdem dieser Selbstmord begangen hat. Norman mietet sich dort ein, doch das Haus hat einen schlechten Ruf. Für lange Zeit lebte ein Dr. Freudstein in diesem Haus und kurz nach dem Einzug geschehen merkwürdige Dinge... und Lucy findet im Keller auch noch einen Sarg.
