Das Drama ist der erste Spielfilm von Pasolini und galt in Italien als Skandalfilm. Es zeigt die Armut und das Elend in einer Vorstadt Roms. Nachdem Vittorio Cataldi seine Familie verlassen hat, versucht er sich erfolglos als Zuhälter und als Dieb. Vittorio verhält sich höchst umoralisch, als er die unerfahrene und anständige Stella auf den Strich schickt.
