The Whole Shootin’ Match
A key, quietly influential precursor to America’s indie-film boom, Eagle Pennell’s watershed first feature details the tragicomic struggles of two down-and-out friends, Loyd (Lou Perryman) and Frank (Sonny Carl Davis), as they dream, scheme, and drink (a lot) while trying to land their big break in 1970s Austin, Texas, with a series of get-rich-quick schemes. The film’s ambling narrative, vivid characterizations, atmospheric cinematography, and rough-hewn charm so impressed Robert Redford that it inspired him to launch the Sundance Institute in order to nurture the kind of offbeat regional filmmaking that Pennell pioneered.
