Zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges sind Giovanna und Antonio gerade in den Flitterwochen. Antonio möchte den Einberufungsbefehl entgehen, doch sein Versuch scheitert. Er muß nach Rußland an die Front. Als er nach dem Krieg nicht mehr heimkehrt,macht sich Giovanna auf die Suche nach ihm.
