Maou returns to his apartment downhearted, only to receive news that his own complex will be temporarily shut down for construction work. The landlord suggests working for her niece as a live-in staff in a beachside city. Maou, Ashiya, and Urushibara take up the offer.

4. The Overlord Learns Hardships by Suffering a Loss

Maou and his friends guess that Alas Ramus may be an incarnation of Sephira Yesod, the world-forming fruit of the Sephirothic tree. Angel Gabriel and his Heavenly Army visit Overlord's Castle. Maou negotiates and holds off on the battle for a day, then asks Emi to spend a night preparing for the skirmish. Maou, who cannot bear to see the little Alas Ramus cry, faces Gabriel.

Maou, Emi, and Alas Ramus visit the amusement park as Ashiya, Chiho, and Emi's co-worker Rika watch on. During a hero show, Alas Ramus falls ill, and a crescent-shaped crest appears on her forehead. However, a mysterious woman cures the little girl. The woman then reveals that she is with Gabriel and his men to bring Alas Ramus back to their world.

Alas Ramus, a little girl who broke free from an apple, is attached to Maou and Emi as if they were her parents. Though many questions about her are unanswered, Maou takes her under his wing. However, Alas Ramus misses Emi and cries throughout the night. Her crying is so exhausting that the penny-pinching Ashiya spends money to eat out. Concerned, Chiho brings toddler toys in an attempt to placate her.

Overlord Sadao Maou and his loyal former chancellors Shiro Ashiya and Hanzou Urushihara share a tiny flat. While Ashiya cries over Urushihara's money-wasting ways, Maou spots something under a shoebox. Meanwhile, Emi Yusa, the hero, visits Maou's neighbor Suzuno Kamazuki, a judge from Ente Isla. Chiho Sasaki, Maou's high schooler co-worker, wants to bring Suzuno some dried sage for the Obon festival. She follows Maou to his complex... entering the frenzy.
