Doogie appears on “The Jenny Jones Show” as one of a group of guests who are all child prodigies. A heated debate erupts between Doogie and the others over whether or not they retreat to their professions so they can feel superior to others. Vinnie, meanwhile, is suffering from writer’s block and cannot begin his new script.

Vinnie is picked for jury duty and attends a trial in which a young man is accused of striking his boss. When the jurists take a straw vote, only Vinnie refuses to cast his vote as “guilty.” The others are incredulous, given the testimony they have heard, but Vinnie insists he had his doubts. He tells Judge Bancroft he wishes to be dismissed from the jury due to illness, but the judge convinces him that a good jurist stays and fights for the cause if he is not completely convinced a verdict is correct.

Doogie tells Vinnie he is not bothered by the fact that newspaper caricaturist, Hank Bellamy—whom he is treating for a fractured arm—drew an unflattering likeness of him in his syndicated cartoon strip. Bellamy dubs Doogie, “Dorky Housecall.” Later, first year resident Tom Shepard introduces himself to Doogie and Vinnie, then asks where he can take his beautiful girlfriend, Michele, on a date. Doogie politely tells Tom that he and Michele were dating until she decided she wanted to see other men. Bellamy picks up on the rift between Doogie and Michele and makes light of them in his cartoons. Dr. Fryman and Doogie inform Bellamy that his fracture was caused by cancer, which tests reveal is widespread.

Vinnie is angered when his bank denies his request for a credit card. As a protest, he withdraws all his money—$20.17—from the bank using an automated teller. But a glitch in the computer system credits him with a new balance of $16,000.17. Meanwhile, Doogie helps Molly Harris, a tomboyish 12-year-old patient at the hospital, with her homework. Molly enjoys Doogie’s company. When Vinnie stops by the hospital to show Doogie his new bank account balance—which his friend assures him is an error that will be quickly corrected—Molly approaches Vinnie and asks him what he finds attractive in a girl.

Doogie receives a postcard from Rachel Wilson, an incredibly beautiful young woman who babysat him when he was a child, but whom he has not seen since. He meets Rachel at his loft and she is still just as beautiful as he remembered, and he admits that he has had a crush on her ever since she moved away. She has a hard time reacting to him as an adult until she sees him respond to an emergency at the hospital. At the loft, Rachel and Doogie share a passionate kiss, but Rachel stops the romance. Rachel believes that if they go any further she will no longer be Doogie’s perfect fantasy.

As Vinnie edits the movie “The Wolfman” for a class project, he and Laura fall into each other’s arms. Vinnie becomes a man. He tells the good news to Doogie, who congratulates him. When Laura suggests that she and Vinnie attend a movie, Vinnie fakes being busy that night and suggests that she and Eliot, a fellow student nurse, go instead. Doogie knows that Vinnie is not busy that evening and thinks his friend is being moronic for letting his girlfriend go out with another man. But Vinnie considers his action a test to see if Laura really loves him.

16. The Adventures of Sherlock Howser

Doogie and Michele Faber watch a Sherlock Holmes movie on television. Michele announces that she cannot join Doogie at a Bruce Springsteen concert because she has a date with someone else. Doogie lapses into a dream in which he, as Sherlock Holmes, and Vinnie as Watson, agree to take on the case of a young woman, Miss Faber, who has been receiving letters which warn of impending violence. They are joined by Mrs. Howser, as Mrs. Hudson, and Doogie, as a surgeon who works with Miss Faber. At the hospital, Spaulding announces her engagement to Dr. Bob Whitman. Doogie, however, finds it hard to muster any enthusiasm for her choice of husbands, as he finds Dr. Whitman a little “dry."

15. It's A Tough Job...But Why Does My Father Have to Do It?

In the hospital cafeteria, Doogie and Spaulding talk with Dr. Brian Horschlauer, frazzled Head of Family Medicine. As Horschlauer complains about being overworked, he suddenly collapses headfirst into his chicken chow mein and dies. Later, Vinnie is stunned when his father, Carmine, shows up at Doogie’s housewarming with Lorre, an attractive chiropractor in her mid-forties. An argument erupts in which Vinnie tells his father that he has turned his family into a joke by dating another woman before his divorce is even settled.

Doogie’s colleagues at the hospital rib their young friend about his third date with Michele Faber, an attractive nurse. Expecting that their evening together will continue into the next morning, Doogie creates a romantic atmosphere in his loft—complete with flowers and candles—and cooks an Italian dinner. But when he attempts his advance on Michele, she tells him she dislikes men who think of women as sex objects.

After buying food for an upcoming New Year’s Eve party, Doogie and Vinnie return to the loft and find a gorgeous young woman sunbathing in the nude on the fire escape. The woman, Phoebe Hale, shows Doogie and Vinnie a lease, proving she has a right to the loft. Vinnie convinces his friend that Phoebe—who has appeared in several commercials for “Relentless” perfume—should be his roommate. But Doogie soon discovers that his personality clashes with Phoebe’s, even when she tells him that—as a model—she undresses in front of strangers all the time.

12. The Mother of All Fishing Trips

Doogie and his father eagerly await the beginning of their annual fishing trip. Mrs. Howser asks to hear their “bean story,” a special moment between father and son, but neither thinks she would enjoy it. While donning his heavy backpack, Dr. Howser hurts his back, and must reluctantly forego his plans. Mrs. Howser offers to take her husband’s place on the trip, and Vinnie cements the plan when he offers to tend to the incapacitated Dr. Howser during his wife’s absence. But Doogie finds that life with his mother in the wilderness is not quite the same experience he enjoyed with is father. Mrs. Howser talks incessantly. When she catches and lands a fish all by herself, Doogie becomes impressed. But she infuriates her son when she asks if he uses condoms.

11. Will the Real Dr. Howser Please Stand Up

Vinnie takes a job with the “Close Encounters” video dating service and convinces Doogie that he should become a member. Upon viewing a cut of Doogie’s “date tape” for the first time, Doogie and Vinnie realize that he comes off looking like a nerd. Vinnie takes the liberty of re-editing the reel so that his friend’s image is remolded into that of a daredevil ladies’ man. A cute girl named Rox sees the tape and responds. Embarrassed, Doogie destroys the cassette.

Though Doogie boasts to others at the hospital that he is attending a wild party Friday night, he goes home alone to an empty loft. His answering machine contains a message from his vacationing parents, who wish him a Happy Thanksgiving. Doogie discovers the one constant in his life—Buster the Goldfish—is dead. Back at the hospital, Dr. Rickett tells the boy genius to “get a life."

Janine visits Vinnie after not having seen him for over eight months, and sparks begin to fly almost immediately. At the hospital, Doogie lobbies to have one of his patients, Jack Fogle, given priority in receiving a heart transplant. But Doogie catches Jack smoking a cigarette in his room, a signal that he is not as deeply committed to the program as others who need the same operation. Doogie contemplates reporting Jack to his superiors, but reconsiders after meeting his charming 13-year-old daughter, Amy.

Vinnie is unsuccessful in his attempt to persuade Doogie and his parents to help finance his student film. Undaunted, Vinnie stages a yard sale. Seeing that Vinnie is willing to sell his favorite possessions to raise the thousand dollars, Doogie and his parents acquiesce. At the hospital, Doogie meets a deaf girl named Julia Myatt. He is able to communicate with her through the use of sign language, and the two enjoy each other’s company so much that Doogie asks Julia out on a date. The couple go to an amusement park, where Doogie tries to interest Julia in a cochlear implant, a procedure that might partially restore her hearing. Vinnie and a fellow film student join the couple at the park. Vinnie’s date chides him about the money he has to make his movie, a pittance compared to the budgets of his rich classmates.

When Doogie finds out where Laura Temple, who is an attractive student nurse at the hospital, regularly walks her dog, he is coerced by Vinnie into borrowing a friend’s terrier to stage a convenient meeting in the park. Vinnie, however, embarrasses his friend in front of Laura, and Doogie admits the entire meeting was staged. But Laura thinks the idea of borrowing a dog in order to meet new people is cute. She also thinks Vinnie is cute, and asks Doogie if he thinks his friend will go out with her.

Doogie fantasizes that he is a lucky contestant on the game show, “So You Wanna Be A Trauma Surgeon?” But in reality, he makes a mistake while assisting Dr. Angelis on an emergency splenectomy operation and burns a hole in a patient’s bowel. Surrounded by a room full of his peers, Doogie is embarrassed by Dr. Charles Meyerson, who grills the young doctor for his error. When Dr. Angelis tells Doogie he will be surgeon-in-charge during the next emergency operation, he experiences nightmares in which he makes a mistake that costs the patient his life.

Doogie leads a newly graduated group of R-1’s on a tour of current patient cases at the hospital. The questions Doogie poses to his students are answered almost exclusively by Elena Spencer, an extremely bright and self-confident young woman who gets on Doogie’s’ nerves. Doogie’s tour includes a visit with a patient who had been admitted for the removal of a painful cyst from his rectum, none other than Dr. Benjamin Canfield. Vinnie shows Doogie a wedding video he is producing, which features a beautiful bride in a loving close-up and not much else.

Doogie, his parents, and Vinnie tour a seemingly endless series of interchangeable condominium units with the help of Candy Daharzan, a real estate agent. Later, Vinnie calmly reveals to the Howsers that his parents are getting a divorce, and his father is selling the house and moving to the Marina. But when he and Doogie are alone in Venice, he confesses his true feelings; his parents are behaving like fools. Vinnie suggests that he settle in Venice instead of buying a condo. Doogie notices a “For Sale” sign on a loft space. Intrigued, he takes his parents to the enormous loft space, where he learns from the owner, Harold Bailey that it was once the sight of a beatnik coffee house, a rehearsal hall, and a gymnasium. Doogie fantasizes he and Vinnie as characters in each of the settings.

As Doogie and Vinnie view the 3-D movie “Gorilla At Large” on television one night, the doorbell rings. Despite Vinnie’s warnings that the man at the door might be a killer, Doogie opens the door, and is greeted with a .44 Magnum. Later, the boys give police officers details of the encounter, in which the two were tied up and robbed of their wallets, and the Howser home was looted. At the hospital, Doogie listens as Curley, Raymond, and Dr. Canfield discuss their experiences with crime in the city.

Doogie ignores his mother’s request that he stay for dinner so that she can introduce him to her boss, but when he meets the lovely Suzanne Rogers, he quickly changes his mind. The Howsers and Suzanne celebrate Doogie’s 19th birthday after dinner, since both Dr. and Mrs. Howser will be out of town that weekend. At the hospital, Dr. Howser talks with Betty Jameson, and her developmentally disabled daughter, Amelia. Betty has been admitted for an angioplasty, and though Dr. Howser assures her that the operation is relatively low risk, he brings up the subject of her daughter, and the question of who would care for her if something were to happen.

As Vinnie discusses the merits of a 1958 Nash Rambler with Doogie and his parents, the verdict in the Rodney King case are announced on television. As the victims of the rioting begin to fill the hospital, Vinnie shows up with his camera to record the event. Doogie convinces his friend to watch over a group of children brought to the hospital by Rita, an injured black woman who runs a day care center. But one of the children accidentally gets left behind in an elevator, and Vinnie frantically tries to keep the group in tow while racing down the hospital stairwell to locate the missing boy.
