4. The Valiant One

Manny is parked outside an Italian restaurant, armed with a knife. Jotham Starr emerges from the restaurant and Manny follows Jotham leading him to a high-end hotel. As Jotham enters the hotel lift, Manny waits a beat before stepping into another lift. The lift doors close. TWO DAYS EARLIER: Manny and Sam meet with Jotham’s lawyer, Brett Huntley, at the same hotel. Brett confronts the parents about the newspaper stories circulating about Jotham. Manny denies any responsibility for what is being published. Brett demands that the Manny and Sam release a statement denying the stories in the press, failing which they will sue them for breach of their NDA. When Sam refuses, Brett threatens to dig into the their past, insinuating it’s not just Manny who has been unfaithful in the past. Down in the hotel car park, Manny confronts Sam about what Brett has just said. Sam is disgusted and drives off. Dominic approaches Jess and tells her that Jotham has hired a publicist to discredit Isaac and is in the process of suing his newspaper. He asks Jess to get her parents to agree to do an anonymous recorded interview with a US newspaper, in the hope of finishing Jotham once and for all. Jess tells her mum about Dominic’s proposal but Sam is uncertain about the offer. They both go to hospital to visit Isaac, but as they get nearer, Jess becomes nervous, still unable to face Isaac after what happened, and she runs off. Isaac’s doctor informs Manny and Sam that she is prepared to approve Isaac’s return home. To Manny’s surprise and annoyance, Sam announces that Isaac will be living with her in her new flat. Sabrina and Tyrone arrive to visit Isaac. There is an awkward atmosphere between Tyrone and Isaac but the boys are encouraged to go outside together. Tyrone apologises to Isaac for rejecting him when he heard about the abuse. As Isaac and Sam prepare to leave the hospital, Sam tells Manny about the proposed interview Dominic has suggested. Manny is dismissive, but Sam thinks it is a chance to set the record straight. Sam tells Isaac about the interview, admitting that she sees it as her way of fighting back while protecting him. Sam makes it clear she will only go ahead with the interview if Isaac agrees, but he is unsure. In a call with Brett, Manny agrees to make the public statement Brett required but, in return, wants to meet Jotham alone to try and find closure. The next day Manny arrives at the house bought with the pay off, where Sam and Isaac are packing up Isaac’s belongings to take to his new home. Both Isaac and Sam find Manny’s behavior odd. Once alone, Manny walks around the house one last time, remembering what Jotham has done to their family. Filled with anger, he leaves with a kitchen knife hidden in his jacket.

Manny, Sam, Isaac and Tyrone attend the Valiant & Son premiere. Manny and Sam tense up when they see the producer, Jotham Starr, arrive and pose for photographs with Isaac. In a rage, Manny follows after Jotham, calling out to him. THREE DAYS EARLIER: At school, Isaac is acting up and winds up his friend HAYDEN for having an all-boys sleepover for his birthday. He pulls at TASHA’s skirt as she walks past him and, when she reacts angrily, insults her. Sam and Ryan’s conversation in the kitchen of the new Mensah home is interrupted by the arrival of Tyrone, who claims he’s home early due to a fire alarm. Sam is unconvinced and irritated by Tyrone who is now staying with Manny and Sam. Cheryl Denon has arranged to meet Manny and Sam that evening to discuss the publicity surrounding the upcoming release of Isaac’s film. As a nervous family waits, Jess arrives unexpectedly. There is tension between Jess and her parents, which is only exacerbated when Jess asks Isaac for money to help with her rent. As they begin to argue, Cheryl arrives. Outside in the garden, while going through Isaac’s press tour schedule, Cheryl informs them that Jotham will also be attending the premiere, which angers Sam and Manny and causes an uncomfortable Isaac to walk off. Back in the kitchen, Tyrone enjoys winding up Jess by pitting Isaac’s acting career against hers. Jess and Isaac start arguing with Jess resentful of the opportunities their parents gave Isaac and Isaac angered by Jess’ dismissal of his hard work and talent. As Jess and Isaac are drawn into a heated argument, their parents intervene much to Tyrone’s amusement. Sam blames Tyrone for the argument and tells Manny that Tyrone needs to leave. An upset Jess leaves, unaware that Dominic is watching her from his car. Manny goes over to Sabrina’s house to talk about their son. Sabrina brings up Sam’s spiteful attitude towards Tyrone. Sensing that Manny is down, Sabrina comforts him over Isaac’s success, telling Manny he should be proud they have bettered themselves through Isaac’s talent and Manny being a supportive father. Back home, Manny lies to Sam and tells her Sabrina wasn’t in. Next morning, at school, the headteacher pulls Isaac out of class for an important chat show interview. On the way out, the headteacher reprimands Isaac for inappropriately touching Tasha’s skirt and his abusive language. Isaac storms off, unapologetic.

14-year-old Isacc Mensah is throwing a pool party at his lavish home. Everyone appears to be having a good time, including his mum Sam and half-brother Tyrone. In the kitchen, his dad Manny looks up promotional images for Valiant & Son, Isaac’s upcoming Hollywood film. As Manny looks at a photograph of the film’s producer, Jothan Starr, his demeanor changes and as his grip tightens on a kitchen knife, his hand starts to bleed. 12 MONTHS EARLIER: Manny greets Isaac and his chaperone Cheryl Denon at the airport. She compliments Manny about Isaac’s hard work in Hollywood. On the drive home, Isaac is distant and evades Manny’s questions. Arriving back at their humble house, Isaac is surprised to find a welcome home party thrown by his mum. He catches up with his sister Jess, Tyrone, his uncle RYAN and his grandmother Maggie. Jess and Sam worry over the broken fridge and a debt collector who wants to tow Manny’s car away. Tyrone’s mother, Sabrina, arrives, much to the displeasure of Sam. Realising that Isaac has disappeared from the party, Manny and Sam find him curled up in bed. He fearfully shows them a video on his phone – they are horrified to find it’s of footage of Jothan Starr, the producer of Valiant & Son, coercing Isaac into a sexual act. Isaac informs his distraught parents that nobody else can be told, not even Jess.
