6. The Motherships Have Landed

It’s 23rd December, and Ralph and Katie look forward to settling together for some Christmas peace. But all that goes out the window when they realize they’ve double booked themselves on Christmas Day. Ralph decides they will go to Steve and Clare’s – and he will talk to his mum and set her straight. But when he gets to Louise’s and sees her excited, he shuts up. Katie tells him not to worry. They will talk to Louise tomorrow. But that plan is promptly upended when Louise arrives unannounced with a troupe of carol singers at an ungodly hour. Staying home for Christmas brings Ralph and Katie closer to Brian. It’s the first time Brian has seen Ralph and Katie in their own space, as they are, and it shifts something in him. That evening at Louise’s, before they get bulldozed into anything else, Ralph and Katie escape into the sparkling Christmas night. A year into their married life, it feels like they’ve got this.

5. Ralph’s Balls

Ralph is up early with something on his mind. He has an appointment with the doctor, and Danny is going with him. Ralph hasn’t told Katie, for now. In the waiting room, Ralph tells Danny he should message Tom: he likes him. But Danny claims he’s happy just being friends. Ralph reveals he has found a lump on one of his testicles, and his doctor would like Ralph to have an ultrasound so they know what they’re dealing with. On the eve of the scan results, Katie tries to reassure Ralph it might all be okay. But for Ralph, this whole thing has made him realize that one day this will end; he and Katie will lose each other. Later, Tom and Danny meet face-to-face. Will they confess their feelings for one another?

4. Empty Nest

Something is up with Katie’s parents. They’ve started sending weird texts, and when Clare arrives at the bakery and admits that all is not well with Steve, Katie knows she needs to get to the bottom of whatever’s going on. Steve turns up, claiming he’s dropped by to replace a few lightbulbs. On the spot, he can’t articulate how he feels, and instead of engaging with Clare and Katie, he gets into an argument with Brian. Katie begins to wonder if the rift between her parents is her doing. Emma is heading off on another date with Cycle Shorts Guy when Gary turns up out of the blue. What will Emma do now?

3. Babysitters' Club

Ralph trips while at work and get laid up on the sofa with his leg in a boot. Louise offers to help Katie look after him, but Katie says no. It’s her job. Soon though, Katie is exhausted. Somehow looking after Ralph is less fulfilling than she thought it would be. At the bakery, Emma explains her new dating strategy to Danny. Later, Danny and Katie encounter Tom, who is babysitting Rosie as a favor to Rebecca. Katie’s parents drop by and as the doorbell keeps ringing, Ralph and Katie’s smart speaker, programmed jokily by Ralph, also starts to make a series of unhelpful interjections. Later on a bench by the Lake, with some much-needed peace, Katie wonders what the "right way" to be a loving partner is.

2. Valentine's Day

When Ralph finds Valentine's card addressed to Katie in unfamiliar handwriting, the turbulence he feels when he discovers that she’d been in love with someone else hits him like an emotional trainwreck. And instead of giving the card to Katie, he pockets it. For Emma, this Valentine’s Day feels very different after being dumped by Gary. She decides to host Valentine’s party, which she hopes will encourage the whole community to celebrate love and raise cash for the choir to buy a new piano. Danny finds himself reacquainted with Tom, and despite insisting he is “Valentine’s intolerant,” he feels an unexpected tingle in the love department.

In their first act as a newly married couple, Ralph and Katie have sacked their old-fashioned Support Worker and taken on Danny, much to Louise’s horror, is young and modern. The newlyweds plan their first dinner party for Emma – Katie’s workmate from the bakery, and her fiancé Gary. But Emma arrives with disheartening news. Worried that Emma will be a permanent guest, Ralph and Danny plan to push Emma out, only for it to backfire. Katie is nervous about an upcoming interview and looks to Ralph for comfort. Later, a shocking revelation about Katie's past has Ralph baffled.
