Moti (Amitabh Bachchan) is a poor man who earns through selling jaggery in the market. He gets the raw material and sends it to a widow named Mahjubhi (Nutan), who makes the best jaggery in the vicinity. Moti loves a girl from the village named Phoolbanu (Padma Khanna), but cannot marry her unless he pays the wedding expenses to her father. Therefore, he decides to move on and marries Mahjubhi. After his marriage he makes Mahjubhi toil a lot to save enough money for the wedding expenses and eventually dumps her accusing her of infidelity. Moti now happily marries Phoolbanu, however his business takes a beating as Phoolbanu does not lend a helping hand. Will Moti return to his innocent wife Mahjubhi?
