Gros Morne
GROS MORNE means "the great somber" though the music driving this cinematic portrait of the Newfoundland park is busy, inventive and sometimes raucous. Part of the "National Parks Project" series imaginatively marking the 100th anniversary of Canada's park system (the world's oldest), it's a combination of ravishing natural environs and impromptu sonic responses to them that features performers Melissa Auf Der Maur (formerly of Hole and Smashing Pumpkins), Catl and Sam Shalabi playing everything from oud to electric guitar to rock percussion (rock as in the mineral kind, that is). - Dennis Harvey
