The film, based on the play by Luigi Pirandello, is set in a castle where the owner's uncle, deranged after a fall from a horse, has lived for twenty years labouring under the delusion that he is the German Emperor Henry IV. His relatives use various plays to make him recover his wits or to unmask his pretence. But Henry becomes, even more determined to withdraw from the world forever.
